Victorian botanical artist, explorer and biologist – at a time when ladies really didn’t do that sort of thing.
Marianne was extraordinary at any time in history, but her extensive far-flung travels and discoveries are all the more outstanding, considering her environment.
She mostly travelled alone and in her mid-years, her obsession and desire to capture the world’s flora, record it and bring the evidence home, driving her.
This remarkable woman was respected and admired by the likes of Charles Darwin, she traversed impossible terrains and captured great beauty in the name of science and art.
We were lucky enough to visit the gallery she set up in Kew Gardens as a record to her lifetime’s work. Each wall is jam packed with more than 800 paintings, in itself a colossal achievement - and Marianne planned it all.
‘’I am a very wild bird and like liberty.’ said Marianne – we hear you sister.
Marianne North. Truly exceptional. Go visit the gallery and be inspired:
